Creative Thinking Helps Working Moms With Time Management

January 8th, 2009

Today the stress of being a mother, a wife, and a working professional can sometimes be overpowering. Trying to multitask is difficult enough, but which facet should take priority? A professional career requires attention, time and commitment, leaving less time for the family. A career takes time away from children when they are growing up. And then there are carpools, PTA, and endless school activities to attend.

Then, there’s him. You remember him. He’s the one you fell in love with, and couldn’t keep your hands off. Now, it’s just the opposite. When you see that wink and smile, you think “Oh, No!” Of course, there’s the endless barrage of household chores and errands. Meals that need to be fixed, dishes to be done, clothes washed. You know the drill. And as if that wasn’t enough, you know you need to find time for you. But, how? Here are some ideas that might help to make your life a little easier. Find an employer who will allow you to job share. This is a relatively new concept that provides the perfect balance for many working moms. Basically two people share one job.

Commonly, job sharing is a three/two, two/three work schedule, alternating from week to week. This solution will allow the wife some extra time, even though it does involve a loss of some income. Mothers groups are also an excellent solution. Moms can take turns sharing taxi services, babysitting, and even grocery shopping. These are a few quick and easy options that can ease the stress and give a working mother time to exhale.

Just as a professional career requires an organized approach necessary for success, so should the way a working mom runs her home. There should be a place for everything and the household should be trained to participate. Some moms even engage their smart phone such as Palm or Blackberry to schedule household tasks.

The successful working mom will engage her spouse. For a few, this will be a piece of cake. For the rest, getting the husband to help out with household chores and the kids is an elusive dream. But, alas, keep on trying. He may not fold the towels, make the bed, or load the dishwasher ‘exactly’ as preferred. But if you can get him to do anything at all, just relax, enjoy a little extra free time, and appreciate him for his efforts, because that’s all there’s likely to be.
