I'm not sure Crisp is saying that originality must be unaccompanied by awareness of the competition; instead, I think he's asserting that originality is not found simply in striving to be different. IMO, true artistic authenticity is possible only when the artist speaks with her own voice, no matter how similar her contemporaries may be. Being true to that voice is what I consider the true goal of the artist; the rest follows. Or should.

I went to the local Borders last night to find this book, but they didn't have it. I know, I know, I should be using my own affiliate link. Still, I'll keep my eyes out for this bad boy and purchase it should I stumble across it.

I think it helps that I think of my blog mainly as a writing exercise for myself. Also, I tend to believe that pretty much anything, no matter how mundane, can be a good story if you tell it right.

As a general rule, I try not to link back between the blogs I write for, as it seems terribly self-serving. (My personal blog nonwithstanding, of course, as if I can't be self-serving there, then where?)

I do hope you'll start a Cranky Cocktail blog; I always thought those posts were fantastic.
